A summer-time digital media project for Boys and Young Men of Color

WHAT?

An opportunity for Boys and Young Men of Color throughout Building Health Communities Places to create  1-2 minute videos to encourage other young men to learn about how and why they should get covered under Obamacare.

WHY?

Young men have a lot on their plate and getting health insurance may not be at the top of their list. But it’s essential. Bad things happen and no one is invincible without health insurance.  Boys and young men are the best messengers to reach other boys and young men about this message.

WHAT SHOULD BE IN THE VIDEOS?

All videos should be produced by and star young men…….and their creativity!

The videos can be 30 seconds to two minutes maximum. They should answer the question “Why get covered?” and encourage other young men to get enrolled.

All videos should consider including the following four messages that answer the question: Why get covered? These are only ideas, but we are looking for youth to be creative and imaginative.

  1. To lead a healthy life. With insurance you can get a free wellness check-up or get free preventive care like flu shots, tests for blood pressure and diabetes
  2. In case you get hit by a bus. If you get injured or are in a car accident, the car is covered – but not you. Quality medical care can save or improve your life.
  3. To protect your wallet. You don’t want to be bankrupted by expensive bills from an accident or an unexpected problem.
  4. It’s the right thing to do. Getting covered is about taking personal responsibility for your health and financial well-being.

All videos MUST contain the following messages:

HOW ARE VIDEO MAKERS SELECTED? Each BHC site can offer one stipend of $1000 to a young man/ men to create a video. Sites must apply by July 5 through a special small grants link that will be available by June 18.  The videos must be produced and delivered by August 16.

Public Health Institute is awarding Climate change $20k grants to urbanized areas (which includes Kern County) twith high rates of asthma, bad air and high heat island vulnerability. This would be an opportunity to move a collaborative effort between air quality and healthy communities of both residents and organizational/public agency aligned efforts forward. California WALKS and RAMP Asthmas have been effective in a Healthy & Safe Communities Network model (within the 6 WINS for Social Equity Network). Either the South Kern BHC Table (Environmental Action Team) or Greenfield Walking Group, already active  in these efforts with the Kern County Dept of Public Health and clean air collaborations could succeed in obtaining such an award. After all, Kern County is one of the five worst counties in the state in health outcomes. What do you think? Time is short but still could be done if interested. Let me know asap. Wendy

Dear Community Leaders,

Freight traffic has had a huge impact on the roads, traffic, and pollution in our communities.  A local consulting firm, VRPA Technologies, is assisting CalTrans in the preparation of a statewide California Freight Mobility Plan and will be hosting a special focus group in Fresno in June.  They really want to here from organizations representing communities impacted by freight traffic to share concerns about the community impact (e.g. torn up streets, air pollution, heavy traffic, etc.) and potential solutions (e.g. improved streets with curbs, gutters, and sidewalks; improved highway interchanges; etc.) to mitigate those impacts.

The Focus Group is scheduled for Tuesday, June 4th in Fresno at 12pm.  They will be providing a great lunch and giving each attendee a  100 gift card!  Don’t miss out on this opportunity to represent your community, enjoy a great meal, and get paid while doing it.  If you are interested, please contact Erica to get more details and RSVP:

For months, South Kern’s Building Healthy Communities (BHC) partners have been meeting and organizing efforts for a major WE Connect Health Care Enrollment and Resources Fair. Held on May 18, the event brought together dozens of partners and engaged more than 1,500 residents.  The effort helped connect families to free health care enrollment assistance and information about new coverage opportunities under the Affordable Care Act. This event is only the beginning for South Kern’s ongoing efforts to enroll residents into coverage opportunities and link them to a health home for preventive health care services. Along with local partners, hundreds of youth from Arvin High’s Health Careers Academy and the Dolores Huerta Foundation Youth Collaborative filled the Kern County Fairgrounds for over six hours, serving families from across the county.

Leading health coverage enrollment efforts was the Building Healthy Communities- South Kern Health Action Team which included Clinica Sierra Vista, Kern Medical Center Health Plan, Kern County Health and Human Services and the Kern County Children’s Health Initiative. Together they organized over 21 certified application assistors and other team staff to screen over 400 individuals for existing health care coverage programs such as Medi-Cal or the county-run Kern Medical Health Plan (Low Income Health Program). Residents were also screened for future coverage opportunities under Covered California and the expected Medi-Cal expansion. Over 360 enrolled for health coverage and over 30 were found to be likely eligible for enrollment in October through Medi-Cal expansion. Local partners will lead the charge to follow up with residents to ensure they receive the ongoing help they need.

South Kern’s BHC community partners including Clinica Sierra Vista, Kern Health Systems, the Family Resource Centers, Greater Bakersfield Legal Assistance, United Farm Workers Foundation and the Dolores Huerta Foundation, Boys and Girls Club, Paramount and Grimmay Farms among others led a strategic canvassing effort to do door-to-door, flyer drop offs and phone banking outreach prior to the event. Through these canvasing efforts, families considered hardest to reach were educated about potential low-cost coverage opportunities available to them and informed about how to prepare for onsite enrollment.  Local partners will be able to build upon this momentum to support continued efforts around outreach and enrollment this year.

As a one-stop-shop, a core number of other services were offered not only as an incentive to attend, but to drive home the message about preventive care. With the help of 46 partner agencies and organizations over 800 attendees received free medical screenings such as dental, vision, glucose and BMI screenings. All residents requiring follow up care were connected to local clinics where they will be able to receive low cost treatment. Families were also connected to important programs, from CalFresh to discounted utility programs. Private partners like Walgreens and Intuit also stepped up to connect families to helpful resources.

Thanks to the outreach and education done by media, including KGET, KBAK, KUZZ, To Your Health, New America Media, De-Bug Youth Media, Univision and Telemundo, coordinated messaging helped provide the information that residents needed to take advantage of the onsite resources available to them and the new health coverage opportunities available to them in the future.
